Spinal Deformity Surgery

The spine is an intricate part of the human body and as such, it may experience a variety of different issues that could lead to pain and a limited range of movement. Some of those issues are going to involve damage that occurs to the intervertebral discs and the possibility of the nerve being pinched, leading to pain, numbness and tingling throughout the area. At other times, however, the issue runs much deeper and that is the case with spinal deformity. This is a problem that can be corrected through a spinal deformity surgical procedure.

One of the types of spinal deformities that most people think about is scoliosis. Both scoliosis and kyphosis involve a curvature of the spine. These types of deformities may occur as we are very young children but they also can occur as an adult as well. People who are in their younger teenage years are the most likely to experience this type of deformity and need spinal deformity surgery. In some patients, the issue continues to get worse and worse throughout their life and it is not only a cosmetic problem, it can even cause pain if the issue becomes severe enough.

Spinal Surgery Goals

Spinal deformity surgery has a number of different goals. The first goal is to treat the deformity and perhaps even to reverse it so that it is no longer a problem. That is not always going to be possible so sometimes, the best thing that can be done is stop the condition from progressing any further and to normalize the function of the spine. If any pain is involved with the spinal deformity, this is also an issue that needs to be corrected as well.

Types of Deformities

Another type of deformity is spondylolisthesis. With this type of deformity, one of the vertebrae slips forward and this can cause some rather severe problems. Sometimes, a stress fracture may be involved that causes this problem to occur but in other cases, it can be a deformity or defect that actually allows it to take place. When it occurs, it can result in spinal compression or a pinched nerve, either of which can be a very painful and progressive problem. A type of spinal deformity surgery is possible for this condition that fuses the spine to prevent it from slipping any further.
