Chiari Malformation

There are many issues that could occur in the human brain. Some of those problems are temporary and perhaps easy to overcome with the proper treatment. Other problems, however, can be serious and difficult to treat. IN the case of someone who has a Chiari malformation, it is an issue that they have been dealing with since the time they were born. Although it only affects about 200,000 people in the United States every year, it is still an issue that can cause some difficult symptoms.

The Chiari malformation takes place from birth and it is an issue in which the brain tissue is pushing down into the spinal canal. When it is diagnosed properly and the appropriate tests are completed, it is a condition that is often quite treatable by a qualified medical professional. Many people in Hearst and throughout the Dallas Fort-Worth area trust Dr. Dickerman to care for their spine and brain care needs. You can contact their offices to set up a consultation for your problem. After diagnosing the issue, Dr. Dickerman will look into the possibility of options, which may or may not include surgery. You are in good hands when you are under his care.

The symptoms of this condition may differ from one person to another. One person may have pain associated with the problem and another may have a difficulty with swallowing. Some of the symptoms may be controlled with medication and in other cases, actively monitoring the situation may help to reduce the symptoms as well. If a non-surgical option is not able to control the issue effectively, then a surgical treatment may be considered. Dr. Dickerman will review the options so you can make an informed decision.

Most people tend to lump Chiari malformation as one specific type of problem but it is actually a number of different issues. Type I occurs when the brain and skull are growing. That is why the symptoms of type I don’t typically start showing until the person is older. Both type II and type III are present when the person is born. The severity of this condition will differ from one person to another and if no nerves are involved, it might not cause any pain. If that is the case, you could live your entire life without knowing you have this problem.

Along with pain and difficulty swallowing, Chiari malformation can cause a host of other symptoms. Those symptoms include a problem with balance and hand coordination. Dizziness, vision problems and issues with speech may also be seen. Some of the less frequently seen symptoms include weakness, tinnitus, slow heartbeat, and scoliosis. If any of these symptoms occur and persist, it is best to contact a medical professional.

If you live in Frisco, Allen or in the surrounding Metroplex, contact the offices of Dr. Dickerman, a spine physician, to have your spinal problem diagnosed and treated. Left untreated, this condition could lead to spina bifida and other issues, so get the treatment you deserve.
